Building a pipeline around the person behind the brand.
How Pearl Lemon supported San Diego Squarespace studio Subtle Square with targeted email campaigns, LinkedIn prospecting and founder-led content across a multi-month 2018 engagement.

Several routes to a conversation.
01 / The context
Good design doesn't automatically create sales conversations.
Subtle Square designed Squarespace websites for businesses. The commercial challenge was finding the right people, giving them a reason to consider a new website and making the studio's founder visible and credible before a pitch.
This isn't an impulse purchase. A new website can touch a company's positioning, customer enquiries, bookings and day-to-day operations. A generic “your site looks outdated” email gives a decision-maker very little reason to respond.
The historical engagement combined direct prospecting with work on founder visibility. That meant more than building a contact list: industry choice, a relevant email opening, the sender's voice, social presence and response handling all mattered.
02 / Audience design
The targeting was much more specific than “business owners.”
A March 2018 client planning email ranked industries by preference. It gave the outreach team a useful starting point for thinking about which businesses could benefit from a better website and how the offer should be framed.
Vineyards & wineries
Website design could be discussed through visitor experience, tasting enquiries, local discovery and the presentation of a premium brand.
Breweries
A distinct audience with its own visual identity and messaging. Historical records include brewery-specific email copy reviews.
Local service businesses
Vacation rentals, photographers, veterinarians, optometrists and property businesses appeared on the client's preference list.
Audience categories above were supplied as target preferences in historical client correspondence; they are not claimed as a complete or achieved contact-volume report.
03 / The delivery chronology
Campaigns developed through real client feedback—not just a single email sequence.
The archived correspondence shows a working sequence of audience decisions, message revisions, active outreach and content collaboration. The dates below describe documented activity, not an independently audited performance timeline.
Qualify the fit
Align on the founder's LinkedIn positioning, appropriate prospects and categories the studio did not want to target.
Segment & write
Identify preferred industries, test outreach angles and involve the client in revisions to email copy.
Launch & refine
Continue email and LinkedIn activity while reviewing response notifications, signatures, messages and follow-up quality.
Build authority
Review LinkedIn status updates, Quora content and more tailored copy for prospective business audiences.
04 / The operating system
One founder. Three complementary ways to get noticed.
Cold email: Industry-specific campaign drafts gave the studio a way to introduce its services to prospective customers without relying on broad generic messaging. In March and April the client reviewed copy, requested changes and signed off versions for launch.
LinkedIn prospecting: Profile positioning and connection messaging put a real human identity behind the outreach. The archived record includes prospect restrictions, connection-message examples and a late-April request to check and respond to LinkedIn activity.
Founder-led content: The team collaborated on LinkedIn status updates and Quora material to explain expertise beyond a single sales message. The client's responses show that editorial review was active, not merely an item listed in a proposal.
These channels served different jobs. Email opened a conversation, LinkedIn provided professional context, and content gave a prospective client more evidence of how the designer thought.
A visual reconstruction of documented workstreams; not a screenshot of the original software or a claimed sales dashboard.

Founder credibility and outbound prospecting worked as parts of the same commercial problem.
For a boutique agency, the prospect has to believe both in the service and in the person who will deliver it. A strong first message starts the exchange; a coherent online identity helps the prospect decide whether that exchange is worth having. That is why personal brand content belongs in the same conversation as appointment setting—but its impact should not be counted as a booked meeting without evidence.
05 / Evidence & outcomes
What the 2018 records establish—and where the reporting stops.
The strongest proof in this case is the actual work carried out, not an exaggerated conversion headline. The original material establishes an active multi-month engagement and client collaboration; it does not contain a reconciled final sales ledger.

06 / Lessons for buyers
What an agency can take from this project
Why segment before writing outreach?
A prospecting list based only on a job title misses the reason someone might buy. A photographer, brewery and property business face different website problems, even if the same studio could serve them all. Industry research lets the opening message address a realistic need.
Why involve the founder in copy review?
Founder-led services are personal. Client input helps remove generic or inauthentic lines, check which sectors make sense, and keep the email voice consistent with the founder's actual expertise.
Does personal-brand content replace outbound?
No. Prospecting and publishing work at different stages. Direct messages can create immediate conversations; useful commentary can help the prospect validate the person behind the offer. Both need their own success measures.
How should results be measured now?
Agree on unique prospects contacted, replies, qualified opportunities, calls booked, calls attended, proposals and closed contracts. Record owner, source channel and date at each stage to avoid treating the same contact as multiple new leads.
